"What Child is This" on the HT Chromatic Alto Kalimba
"What Child is This" is usually written in the key of G, which is what most Hugh Tracey kalimbas are tuned to,
but it has some accidentals in it that a regular kalimba does not have. This is the type of music that is
perfect for the Hugh Tracey Chromatic Alto kalimba.
Normally I tune my chromatic kalimba to C on the front, making it more piano-like.
But since "What Child is This" is in the key of G, it works better to tune the front of the kalimba to G for this song. Otherwise, you will have to use
more notes on the back and will have fewer glissandos on the front that will sound good.
When you tune the front of the chromatic kalimba to G and change those Fs to F#s, you might also want to change the F#s on the back to Fs.
Sometimes if you have notes on the front tuned
the same as some notes on the back, you get an echo effect. This actually sounds quite pretty, but it is a little weird when only some notes have
the echo.
My strategy so far with the chromatic kalimba is to use the notes on the back sparingly, and not go so crazy that the songs are frustratingly difficult
to play. So when arranging "What Child is This" for this kalimba, I chose the notes carefully so the song sounds good but is still playable.
